The Green Adventure · Tromsø

The Green Adventure's northern lights hunt

The Green Adventure takes up to 15 guests out of Tromsø to find clear sky, then serves warm soup by a bonfire with marshmallows while the guide photographs you under the aurora. Pick it for the cosy camp and the free photos, and bring your own winter boots.

The Green Adventure Northern Lights Hunt

About this experience

You meet in front of the Scandic Ishavshotel, where the guides wait about five minutes before departure with The Green Adventure logo. The guide knows the local weather and picks one or more spots away from city light. At camp there's a bonfire, warm soup made in Tromsø for Arctic trips (vegan on request) and marshmallows.

Thermal suits are included; send your size (the same as your winter jacket) so the right one is on board. Boots are not: the operator doesn't lend them, for hygiene reasons, so wear proper winter footwear. You also need a valid passport, because the route may go into Finland. Professional photos of you with the aurora are free, with a small watermark.

On a night without lights, The Green Adventure's terms say no refund is given and there are no free extra tours, but you can ask for a discount on your next tour. Two more rules: the minimum age is 12, and the tour isn't for cruise passengers who aren't staying the night, because the guide won't promise to be back before the ship leaves.

  • Up to 15 guests with a local guide

What guests say

★★★★★

Very experienced guide Antonio who selected beautiful picturesque secluded locations. Very comfortable minibus, thermal gear, good ready made soup with roasted marshmallows and hot chocolate. We had a clear night with an amazing light show.

★★★★★

We had a really lucky night and only had to chase the lights for a few hours before we found a great place where ate by camp fire and saw the lights in full bloom

Jessica was very friendly and knowledgeable. She gave lots of information, took great pictures, and helped us up when we fell in the snow (many times). We even pulled over on the way home to see the lights again when the view was good.

Julien was the guide and the perfect mix of information about the lights, the science behind them, explaining how to track them by yourself for other nights, tips for Tromso and all whilst taking pictures.

Tips before you book

  • Wear real winter boots. The suit is lent, the boots are not.
  • Use a toilet before you leave: the operator warns that proper toilets in the wilderness are rare.
  • Pack your passport and a bottle of water.
  • Mention vegan, vegetarian or allergy needs when you book.
  • Staying in an Airbnb outside the centre? Expect to be dropped at a nearby hotel or taxi stand.
